More on school tax holiday
"People should appreciate tax free days and anything else that will lower the cost of sending your kid to school while helping with the local economy. My child wears Wal-Mart or whatever I buy him! I don't think my son is better than yours or anyone else. I was taught that clean and neat meant more than a name brand. I don't feel it's cool to shop somewhere else and then claim to want better for our schools or city.The merchants here have supported our town for a long time so we should support them."
"The tax holiday will allow people to save money, but will they make those purchases here? Doubtful. You are talking about purchasing clothing from Wal-Mart or Factory Connection, computers from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack, school supplies from Wal-Mart or one of the drug stores. Thankfully, we don't have to buy our own textbooks here yet. Looks like Wal-Mart will be the biggest benefactor of the tax in Hartselle, as usual. As stated last week, Decatur and Cullman are observing the same holiday, and I imagine Huntsville will, too, so what's to keep people from going there? I guess our tax savings can be used for gas to those places, since they have the retail options that Hartselle doesn't!"
"I have yet to see junior high or high school age kids who had no input into their wardrobe whatsoever. My children aren't better than anyone and they don't claim to be but they wear what they want to wear, no matter where I have to buy it. Name brands are a fact of life at those ages, no matter where one lives or what the state of the economy is. Boys are just as bad as girls! You may not know that now, but you will. Name brands that kids want to wear don't have to be expensive. You can get them at yard sales, thrift stores, E-Bay, or on sale, like most of us do. You obviously have access to a computer, and probably have the money for internet. You have the money to dress your child in a manner like that of his friends.
It's great that you support your local economy, but don't disparage those of us who want more options. Your resistance to your child, and to shopping elsewhere doesn't make you a better parent than anyone else who posts here.
I'll support our town when I can, but I'll never tell my children they can't have something they want just because Hartselle doesn't have it, shopping, education, athletics, or otherwise!"
Sewer or not to sewer
"Why spend money to put sewer services out where nothing is when there are still residents inside the city limits that don't have city sewage? I think we need to take care of our city residents first before running something like that out into nowhere."
