Booth, 79, directed the Hartselle Tigers to nine state championships and 1,217 wins in 36 seasons.

His last team begins play Thursday in the Class 6A state championship finals in Oxford. Hartselle’s last state championship came in 2022.

The Hartselle native graduated from Morgan County High School in 1962. He returned to the school as a teacher in 1966. In 1988, he was named the school’s baseball coach.

“He was certainly one of a kind. I’ve never met anyone quite like William Booth,” said longtime friend Glenn Thompson.

Booth battled cancer during the 2021 season, but was given the all-clear from doctors that summer.
