New school program receives good response
Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer
Hartselle’s three elementary schools have implemented an Extended Day Program with a combined enrollment of 127 students in grades K-5.
The program puts a priority on getting homework done and uses a classroom teacher for approximately every 20 students to provide oversight and assistance on a one-on-one basis. Students start the extended day at 2:45 p.m. by sharing in a snack time for 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, they participate in a homework time and an outside break or play time. They also play education games, watch TV videos and have access to computer labs. Later on, enrichment activities such as art and drama will be introduced.
Crestline leads the other two elementary schools in enrollment with 53 students. They are divided into three groups, K-1, 2-3, 4-5. A lead instructor is assigned to each group. F. E. Burleson has an enrollment of 40 and Barkley Bridge has 34 students participating. The students are divided into two groups with an instructor for each group at both schools.
Enrollment in the program remains open and newcomers are welcome at any time,” Calvert pointed out. “We plan to add fine arts by the end of the first six weeks.and we feel that will help increase enrollment.”
The program is self-supporting. Each student pays a $25.00 registration fee and $7 a day for the first child and $6.00 per day for the second child in the same family.
