School board elects new chairman

Hartselle's school board has a new chairman.
Greg Cain was elected to serve as chairman of Hartselle's school board in 2005-06 at the board's last regular meeting.
He replaces Ronnie Abercrombie, who was not nominated for reappointment after serving in the position of the past two years. The vote was 3-1-1 with Cain abstaining and Abercrombie voting in the negative.
Dr. Andy Dukes was elected vice chairman. The vote was 3-1-1 with Dukes abstaining and Abercrombie voting in the negative.
Cain, a Decatur police officer, has served on the board for two years. He was vice chairman in 2004-05.
"I realize this will be a challenge for me," Cain stated after the meeting. "But I am looking forward to working with Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed and his staff, faculties, students, parents and citizens to help make our schools the best they can be."
Three Hartselle Junior High students were presented plaques as first place state award winners in different competitions.
They were Meeda Stephenson, Alabama Law Day essay contest, Jake Heym, Duke University 7th grade talent search program; and Zach Bodley, northern division stock market stimulation competition.
The board acted on other matters as follows:
It will make a trip to Boston, Mass. during the March-April 2006 period.
Each principal will determine what days offices will be open.
The central office will continue to operate on a five days per week schedule.
