A look back

By Staff
Researched by Dr. Bill Stewart
Thanksgiving memories, most very recent, dominate this column of holiday news items.
2002 -November 25, Hannah DuVall, daughter of Baptist missionaries Steve and Debbie Duvall in Costa Rica, has told her folks that her "heart hurts for Hartselle." Costa Ricans don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but they do observe Christmas and the country is already decorated with yuletide colors.
2003 -November 26, Many people will enjoy pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving with a special sense of satisfaction. They picked the pumpkins themselves from the patch at Reeves' farm on Highway 36, east of Hartselle.
1998 -November 27, Martine Bates ordered a barbecued turkey from Hartselle's Whitt's location for Thanksgiving. It was picked up the day before and served with Alabama white sauce. Everyone said it was "lip-smackin' good."
2003 -November 28, Wade and Rachel Oakes' Cotaco Creek Farms on Red Oak Road, Somerville, is offering Christmas trees ranging in size from four to 25 feet tall. They are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 5 p.m. and at other times by appointment.
2002 -November 29, Chappells' Family Karate is currently conducting an after-Thanksgiving day camp. The cost is $35 per student.
2003 -November 29, Netta Sue Hill, owner of Suzy's Hallmark in downtown Hartselle, reports a brisk post-Thanksgiving business. She says, "There were a lot of family groups out and people who were from Hartselle who had come back because they wanted to go downtown to shop."
2000 -November 30, Dr. Jan Strother, Hartselle vet, warns pet owners not to share their Thanksgiving turkey leftovers with their dogs. Sometimes turkey bones get stuck so firmly in their dogs' throats that they have to be surgically removed.
2003 -December 1, Hartselle's Wood family (Barry, Julie, and Delany) had Thanksgiving dinner with the Stringfellow family in Birmingham.
2004 -December 1, The Caring Place, a volunteer ministry of Morgan County Baptists located in Hartselle, provided much appreciated Thanksgiving food boxes for those in need a few days ago.
