Local school campuses have always been the sites of a great variety of activities, not just sports.
1955 -September 30, Marty Robbins presented a show tonight at the Riddle Auditorium.
1928 -October 1, Frank Willis Barnett of the Birmingham News says that Hartselle's athletic field is one of the best in the state at any high school. William B. Douglass, a Howard graduate, is the athletic director this year. Lafayette Kelly, also a Howard alumnus, is the football coach. Carolyn Betts, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, is athletic director for the girls.
1935 -October 1, Elbert Jackson, president, is planning another active year for the alumni association of the Morgan County Training School.
1958 -October 2, Charlie Beene is heading up the movement to launch a Hartselle Athletic Booster Club. The first meeting will be held a week from tonight.
1936 -October 3, Ike Parker, former Auburn star, has accepted the head coaching position at MCHS, succeeding W. C. Wood, who quit to become assistant coach at Bessemer.
1956 -October 4, The MCHS B football team is loaded with talent this year. Back David McElroy is playing brilliantly. Bobby Cain is shining on defense and is fully capable of making the big plays, especially pass interceptions. The team leader is definitely quarterback Charles Howell.
1941 -October 5, The Parent-Teacher Association of MCHS is giving great support this year to worthwhile school programs. Mrs. H. M. Betterton is the PTA president.
1949 -October 6, The Morgan County Singing Convention will meet at Union Hill High School this Sunday. T. S. Sparkman is president. The Goodman family from Mayfield, Ky., (who would later become the very successful Happy Goodman Family) will be the guest singers.
1956 -October 6, Most MCHS seniors have signed up to take the yearly trip from the campus to the Alabama State Fair sponsored by the Wolverine Tube Division in Decatur. While at the Birmingham fair they will gather material for their themes on "What Industry Means to Alabama." There will also be time, however, for the many rides and shows on the midway.
