VFDs discuss no burn order

The Morgan County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments held its monthly meeting on Tuesday June 14, with a good representation of its membership in attendance. Departments represented were Bethel-Gum Pond, Brindlee Mountain, Cotaco, Danville, Ebenezer, Eva, Falkville, Flint, Lacey’s Spring, Massey, Mud Tavern, Neel, Oak Ridge, Priceville, Somerville, Tulacah, Tri-County and Trinity.

It was announced that a “no burn” order has been issued by the Alabama Forestry Commission and that the only burns that will be permitted will be those conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Violations of the order can result in fines of up to $1,000 or up to six months in jail. It was pointed out that the law is intended to protect the public. Morgan County residents having questions or desiring information about burn permits should call 1-800942-3107.

Special happy birthday wishes go out this week to Dale Bibb and Gerald Taylor, both on June 23, June Austin on June 24, Tab Terrell and Garrett Vest, both on June 25 and LaVearle Canon on June 26.

Lucy Slater and Frances Rowe enjoyed a trip to New Orleans recently. They spent several days there and also at Waveland and Bay St. Louis. Miss. While in Waveland, they enjoyed visiting Duke and Jan Levy and dined at J’s Restaurant with Stacy Pate and her family. These folks and Frances became friends when Falkville High School’s Student Council helped with the prom at Bay High School after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. Frances said it was heartening to see the rebuilding that has taken place in the area, She pointed out that the last time she saw the steeple of a church there it was lying on the ground. However, she pointed out that there is still much to be done to complete restoration work.

Special thanks go out to Jeff Whitlow and the Old Barn Band for conducting a fundraiser in Decatur for victims of the April 27 tornadoes. The concert took in $4,200 for the Red Cross, with the money going directly to folks in North Alabama. Special thanks also to Kathy Summerford and MarMac Realty for their support.

The Fort Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department will be having its annual BBQ on Sat., June 25, at the Fort Mitchell Fire Department. This is an annual fundraiser and everyone is welcome. Barbecue plates are $7.50, pork or chicken. They will be served from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Yuur support will be greatly appreciated.
