Danville head coach Andro Williams enters his third year leading the Hawks football program. Special to the Enquirer/Amelia Williams

Fall kickoff: A look at the Danville Hawks

Fall camp opened this week for the Danville Hawks.

The Hawks enter year three under Coach Andro Williams, who is 8-13 at Danville and 132-62 overall in 17 seasons at Danville, W.S. Neal and Linden. The Hawks made the 3A playoffs last season for the first time under Williams.

They open the season Aug. 25 at home against Lawrence County.

Until then, take a look at this year’s Hawks below and check back for a story, roster and pictures in the 2023 Morgan County Football magazine.

2022 Record: 3-8, lost in the first round of the 3A state playoffs at Mars Hill

Key Returners: Ben Ellenburg, Landon Hanserd, Caden Flowers, Cole Flowers, Avery Muhammed, Mitchell Owens, Matthew Tidwell, Cody Barber

Key Losses: Gage Taylor, Kade Taylor, Sawyer Tapscott

Newcomer: Christian Rodriguez

Preview: The Hawks enter the 2023 season with no seniors. Sophomore Jace Glenn takes over at quarterback while Ben Ellenburg, last year’s starter, will see time at running back and wide receiver. The offensive line, with four junior starters, will be the most experienced unit on this year’s team. Landon Hanserd and Mitchell Owens return to lead the defensive line, while John Salvia and Matthew Tidwell will lead the linebackers. Despite the lack of senior leadership and experience, the Hawks have plenty of game experience returning this season.

Coach Speak: “Despite our youth and overall numbers, we have a bunch of guys who we feel can go out and be competitive.” – Coach Andro Williams
