Brewer and Danville held events to showcase their teams this past week before their game Friday night to open the season.

The Patriots hosted Meet the Patriots Thursday night with scrimmages and introductions of Brewer’s fall sports teams – football, cross country and volleyball.

“Seeing our middle schoolers, junior varsity and varsity out here playing hard was a great night for Brewer High School,” said Coach Matt Plunkett. “The crowd was amazing for a night like this. Tonight was a confidence-builder for our program.”

The junior high opened the scrimmage with about 25 plays. The junior varsity followed them for about 25 plays.

The varsity Patriots finished the night, showcasing their first-team defense against the second-team offense. The first-team offense then took the field for 30 plays against the second-team defense.

Danville

Danville hosted John Paul II for a jamboree game Friday night. The night started with a 45-minute delay because of the weather, with the teams taking the field to start the game around 8:15 p.m.

The Falcons dominated the first quarter, as they held the Hawks to 12 yards – eight passing and four rushing. JPII finished the quarter with 42 yards of offense. The score was 0-0 heading to the second.

On the Hawks’ second drive of the second quarter, they drove the ball from their 35-yard line to the Falcons’ 3-yard line before a Gage Taylor interception ended the drive. Danville’s defense picked up a safety as Jaquan Loyd tackled the JPII running back in the end zone.

The Hawks took possession of the ball after the safety at the Falcon 48-yard line. The Hawks used an 11-yard run by Grayson Glenn and three consecutive completions by Taylor, the final one for 18 yards and a touchdown to Loyd. After the extra point, the Hawks led 9-0 with four seconds remaining.

The Hawks finished the second quarter with 119 total yards. They ran for 64 yards while completing five passes for 55 yards. The Danville defense held the Falcons to 61 total yards and forced two JPII interceptions.
