A memorial service for Samuel Owen Franklin, 86, of St. Simons Island, Ga., was Wednesday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Simons Presbyterian Church with Edo Miller &Sons Funeral Home of Brunswick, Ga., directing.
A private interment was at Christ Church Cemetery.
Mr. Franklin died Sunday, June 1, 2003. He was a native Georgian, born in Tennille, to Eva and Samuel Owen Franklin. He graduated from Leon County High School in Tallahassee, Fla. and Georgia State in Atlanta, where he later taught in the night business school. He continued his education at Cornell University.
He spent his entire career in the petroleum pipeline business. He retired from Plantation Pipeline Company as an executive after 39 years. He retired to St. Simons Island in 1981. He served in many capacities with the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, as docent, board member, treasurer, and three years as president. He was awarded the Cunningham Bowl of outstanding leadership, and was also the recipient of the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries Award for Outstanding Museum Patron. He was a member of Glynn County Clean and Beautiful, the Glynn County Art Association, and was currently serving as treasurer of the Friends of Coastal Georgia History. He was very dedicated to his work at the Manna House, where he was on the board and served as an active worker for 20 years.
He was a member of St. Simons Rotary Club, a Paul Harris and Ed Bruce Fellow. He served on the board and was club president, as well as chairman of the Rotary Foundation. He was a member and active member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and was currently serving as a Trustee. He was a member of Cherokee Town and Country Club and Sea Island Club. He was the widower of Margaret Brooks Franklin.
He is survived by his wife, Mimi Franklin of St. Simons Island, Ga.; children; Sam Franklin III, Nashville, Tenn., Brooks Franklin, Atlanta, Ga., Meg Lipsey, Hartselle, Mimi Love, Columbia, SC, Marianna Elias, St. Simons Island; grandchildren, Scott Franklin, Memphis, Tenn., Stephen Franklin, Nashville, Tenn., Emerson Franklin, Washington, DC., Retta and Leah Franklin, Atlanta, Ga., Branden Curry and Stuart Love, both of Columbia, SC, William and Wilson Elias, St. Simons Island; and great grandchildren Hayes and Ellie Franklin, Memphis, Tenn.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Margaret Britt Sunday School Class, church officers, and the St. Simons Rotary Club.
