Regional tourney tips off today

Five local girl’s teams will be playing in the regional tournaments that tip off today at Wallace State and Jacksonville State.

Falkville, Danville, Hartselle and Priceville will be playing in the northwest regional on the campus of Wallace State Community College while Brewer will be travelling to Jacksonville State University.

Falkville Lady Blue Devils: 19-11

The Lady Blue Devils are making their first regional appearance since 2013.

Ten of their 11 losses were to teams that either participated in the subregionals or will participate in the regional tournament.

The Lady Blue Devils are led by senior Ravyn Gilstrap and sophomore Mackenzie Veal.

Falkville opens with Belgreen tonight at 6 p.m. at Wallace State.

Danville Lady Hawks: 18-8

The Lady Hawks are making their third trip to Wallace in the last four years. The advanced to the regional final last year before losing to Deshler.

Seven of their eight losses were to regional tournament participants.

They are led by seniors Kayla Compton and Jolee Cole, a Faulkner signee.

Danville opens with Deshler Monday at noon at Wallace State.

Priceville Lady Bulldogs: 24-5

The Class 4A No. 1 Lady Bulldogs are making their second consecutive trip to Wallace looking to put last year’s loss to Deshler behind them.

Four of their five losses were by five points or less. All losses were to regional tournament participants or a Tennessee state play-off participant.

They are led by seniors, Kathleen Wheeler and Skyler Benson, and sophomore, Jenna Walker.

Wheeler is averaging 19.8 ppg and 6.7 rpg. She has scored in double figures every game this season. She recently went over the 2,000-point mark for her career.

Benson is averaging 13.8 ppg and 6.3 rpg. She hit the 1,000-point mark for her career back in late November.

Walker is averaging 11 ppg and 7.1 apg. She recently entered the state record book for total assists in a single game and also for total single season assists.

Priceville opens with Rogers Monday at 9 a.m. at Wallace State.

Brewer Lady Patriots: 22-9

The Lady Patriots are returning once again to Jacksonville State for the northeast regional tournament. This will be their seventh time since 2010 playing in the tournament.

Eight of their nine losses were to regional tournament participants.

The Lady Patriots are led by senior McCarley Northway, junior Jacie Andrews and eighth grader Hope West.

Northway, a Montevallo signee, is averaging 9.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg.

Andrews, who has committed to Faulkner, is averaging 8.6 ppg and 3.4 rpg.

West is averaging 9.2 ppg and 3.7 rpg.

Brewer opens with Center Point Friday at 9 a.m. at Wallace State.

Hartselle Lady Tigers: 26-4

The Lady Tigers are making their third trip to Wallace in the last four years.

All four losses were to regional tournament participants.

Hartselle is a veteran team with six seniors, including three starters.

They are led by senior Moriah Taylor, a Georgia State signee, and freshman Masyn Marchbanks.

Hartselle opens with McAdory Friday at 9 a.m. at Wallace State.
