Famed Hartselle writer William Bradford Huie (1910-1986) has been in the news again recently. Mr. Huie was mentioned frequently in the pages of this newspaper and other state and national publications over many years of a highly distinguished career.
1930-May 8, UA graduating senior William Bradford (Bill) Huie has performed very well as a temporary instructor on the MCHS teaching faculty this semester.
1934-May 8, Although Bill Huie is employed in Birmingham as a reporter for the Birmingham Post, he is making frequent trips back to Hartselle to see Miss Ruth Puckett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Puckett. (Miss Puckett and Mr. Huie were married in the fall of 1934.)
1937-May 9, Alabama, the Magazine of the Deep South, edited and published by Hartselle's William Bradford Huie, is winning praise from many quarters for its in-depth coverage of Alabama politics.
1941-May 10, Hartselle native Bill Huie has been hired as associate editor of American Mercury.
1943-May 11, A commission as a public relations officer in the Civil Engineers' Construction Battalion-the Seabees-has been awarded to Bill Huie. He is currently stationed in Virginia but will ship out overseas in the near future.
1945-May 12, Bill Huie has resumed his association with the American Mercury magazine, now with the elevated titles of editor and publisher.
1952-May 13, Yale graduate and World War II veteran William F. Buckley, Jr., has been added to the staff of Bill Huie's American Mercury. The young Mr. Buckley has the title of associate editor, Mr. Huie's job before his promotion.
1963-May 14, James Garner, Julie Andrews, Melvyn Douglas, James Coburn, and Keenan Wynn are currently hard at work in the filming of the movie version of Hartselle author William Bradford Huie's brilliant novel, "The Americanization of Emily." It will be released to theatres sometime next year.
