The Hartselle Junior High School IMPACT program hosted the first annual Jennifer Burks Memorial 5k Saturday with success.

Nearly 300 competed in the 5k portion of the run and 150 entered the one-mile fun run.

Burks was a beloved HJHS English teacher who lost her battle to cancer in 2014. The IMPACT initiative at HJHS coordinated the run with IMPACT leader Coach Shane Alexander at the helm.

The turnout for the race put a smile on the faces of family members as it clearly showed the community’s support for the Burks.

IMPACT works with students in a “Desk to 5k” training program, getting participants ready to compete in a 5k race. The proceeds from this run will pay registration fees for those students who would like to compete, but cannot afford to pay the fees. Fees average between $25-$30 per event.

Alexander wanted to thank all who helped make this event possible, and mentioned Jon Anderson and Jeremy Simpson, because, without their help, the run might not have happened. He also wanted to thank West Hartselle Baptist Church for furnishing refreshments and drinks for the event.
