Chess tournament winners announced

One hundred fourteen students representing nine middle schools in Morgan County participated in the Spring Chess Tournament on Feb. 21 at Cotaco Junior High School.

The TAG (talented and gifted) program teachers were sponsors. It is open to all students who can compete. Most participants were TAG students, but not all.

Before attending, students competed at each school for the few spots on the travel team. Students played in a single elimination tournament until four students were left.

These four compete in a double elimination for the trophies. The remaining students continue playing for highest point total.

At the end, the points for each 10-minute round are tallied and the person with the highest points receives a medal.

This spring trophies were topped by chess pieces – king, queen knight, etc.

The other teachers and sponsors were Paula Kiggins from Cotaco Lacey’s Spring, Melissa Parker from Danville and Sparkman, Tanya McCain from Priceville, Mica Rabb from West Morgan and Union Hill, Cristal Owens from Falkville and Eva and Sherri Mann, central office coordinator.
