Second suspect charged in home invasion

A second arrest has been made in connection with a home invasion burglary that occurred Oct. 13 in the Oak Ridge community.

James Anthony Tucker, 30, of Decatur, who was released from Huntsville Hospital Thursday, was placed into custody and charged with one count of burglary in the first degree and one count of assault in the second degree. Tucker was being treated for a gunshot wound to the calf and injuries he sustained from being ejected from the vehicle he and his accomplice, Steven Alan Griffin were fleeing when they lost control and wrecked on Norris Mill Toad.

On Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to a call originating from 28 NW Simmons Road in the Oak Ridge community. The caller indicated two men had forced their way into the residence and assaulted one of the residents with a baseball bat and a handgun.

On their arrival, they found that the male resident had in fact been physically assaulted after two men forced their way into his house. They beat and kicked him and then tried to flee. The victim retrieved a handgun and fired a shot at one of the suspects as he tried to get into their vehicle. The female resident of the house was not injured.

Investigator Chad Smith determined that the two suspects were known to the victim and were identified. While processing the scene, he was notified by Alabama State Troopers that they responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on Norris Mill Road, and that the passenger of the vehicle had a gunshot wound to the leg. The driver had been arrested by the Alabama State Troopers for driving under the influence and the passenger had been transported to Huntsville Hospital. They were identified as Tucker and Griffin.

Over the next 24 hours, smith interviewed both residents of the house and Griffin, who was in the Morgan County Jail. Tucker blamed the male resident of the home for an incident, which occurred in Blount County. Both offenders had been watching a ballgame and drinking when they decided to “…take care of him.”

The two suspects are being held in the Morgan County Jail on $62,500 bond each.
