 MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division has launched its annual Boating Basics and License Courses across the northern and central districts of the state. 

 These hands-on classes, provided free of charge, offer participants the opportunity to engage with local ALEA Troopers while receiving vital information about safety and regulations pertaining to local waterways frequently visited by citizens. 

 Upon completion of the Boating Basics course, attendees will receive a certificate via mail, courtesy of Troopers who submit their information to the Agency’s Driver License Division. Subsequently, the Division will update their Alabama Driver License to include the vessel class. However, applicants should anticipate a processing time of up to 10 business days before being able to access their updated license online at alabamadl.alea.gov or through their nearest county probate office. It’s important to note that children aged 12 and older are eligible to obtain a vessel operator’s license, but they cannot operate vessels alone until reaching the age of 14. 

 Two sessions will take place in Decatur, the first at Frederick’s Outdoors, at 1312 South Bethel Rd., March 23 and the second May 4 at Dry Creek Marina, at 3704 Gordon Terry Pkwy. Both sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. To register, contact Sr. Tpr. Larry Adams@alea.gov 

 A one-time application fee of $5 in cash will be applicable, alongside a $36.25 issuance fee for the license.
