Falkville leads early but falters late in loss to Hatton

The Falkville Blue Devils jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter but were held scoreless the remainder of the game in a 28-14 region loss to Hatton.

Falkville took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter when Landon Powers connected with Dawson Folwer for a 74-yard touchdown pass. They converted the two-point conversion on a pass from Powers to Comstock.

On Hatton’s next possession, the Hornets fumbled the ball, and Kole Fitzgerald picked it up and raced 22 yards for a score and a 14-0 lead.

Hatton cut the lead to 14-12 heading into halftime with two long touchdown runs.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle until the final three minutes of the quarter when Hatton picked off a Powers’ pass. They scored two minutes later and then picked up the two-point conversion for a 20-14 lead.

The Hornets capped off the scoring with less than five minutes remaining with a nine-yard touchdown pass and then a two-point conversion for a 28-14 lead.

The win snapped a three-game winning streak for Falkville in the series.

The Blue Devils came into the game averaging 396.6 yards a game but were held to a season-low 160 yards, including only 35 yards rushing.

Powers had 125 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception while rushing for 30 yards. Fowler finished with 82 yards receiving with a touchdown.

Falkville (3-2, 1-2) has a bye week this week before hosting Lexington on October 6.
