Register now to vote in municipal election
For anyone whose name is not listed on the qualified voter list for Hartselle, there is still time to register for the municipal election Aug. 25. The deadline to register with the Morgan County Board of Registrars is Aug. 20.
Voters will choose candidates for mayor, five council members and five members of the Hartselle School Board, effective 2020-2024.
The election will be held in voting centers at First Baptist Church and Sparkman Civic Center, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Five of the six current elected officials for Hartselle – Mayor Randy Garrison, along with councilmen Kenny “K.T” Thompson, place one/council president; Dwight Tankersly, place two; Charles “Chuck” Gill, place three; and Virginia Alexander, place four, have indicated they will seek reelection.
Councilman Matthew Broom, place five, has said he will not seek reelection.
Members of Hartselle school board will also be subject to the election. Current members are Amy Pace, president; Randy Sparkman, vice president; Venita Jones; Dr. James Joy; and Daxton Maze.
Sparkman and Maze will seek reelection for their respective places, while other current board members did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
Qualifying for the election will begin July 7 and continue until 5 p.m. July 21. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m.; 5 p.m. July 21. Qualifiers are urged to call ahead for an appointment.
A potential candidate must:
- be a qualified voter at least 18 years of age
- be a resident for 90 days by election day
- file a statement of candidacy with the city clerk
- pay the $50 qualifying fee
- file Fair Campaign Practices Act forms
- file Statement of Economic interest
A run–off election, if necessary, will be held Oct. 6. Newly–elected officials will take office Nov. 2
Any person may pick up a blank absentee ballot application at the city clerk’s office. A voter may fill out the application and vote at the same time.
Signed applications must be sent to the city clerk by U.S. mail – one application per envelope – or may be delivered in person by the voter.
