Hartselle finishes runner-up in Shrimp Festival

The Hartselle Tigers volleyball team continued its winning ways at the Gulf Coast this weekend, where the girls participated in the Shrimp Festival Tournament in Gulf Shores.

They finished the weekend with a 6-1 record and runner-up to Spanish Fort in the Gold Bracket Finals.

The Lady Tigers opened the tournament with wins over 3A No. 6 Carbon Hill, 2-0 on scores of 25-9 and 25-13; 4A No. 2 Providence Christian, 2-0 with scores of 25-22 and 25-11; and Murphy, 2-0 with scores of 25-19 and 25-15 in pool play.

In bracket play, the Lady Tigers defeated 5A No. 4 Lawrence County 2-0 (25-19, 25-15), Mary Montgomery 2-0 (25-21, 25-8) and Gulf Shores 2-0 (25-13, 25-16).

Hartselle fell to 6A No. 2 Spanish Fort in the Gold Bracket finals 2-0 (25-16, 25-12).

The Lady Tigers were led by Grace Leighton, who finished with 131 assists, 34 digs and nine aces. Hailey Holshouser had 80 digs, 27 kills and six aces, while Lillyanna Cartee added 66 digs and 29 kills.

Hartselle’s record stands at 54-9 heading into the regular season’s final week. 

Earlier in the week Hartselle played a tri-match with Buckhorn and Spanish Fort at Spanish Fort High School Thursday. The Lady Tigers defeated 6A No. 5 Buckhorn 2-1 (25-21, 16-25, 15-12) in their first match but lost to 6A No. 2 Spanish Fort 2-0 (25-19, 25-23).

The Lady Tigers were led by Holshouser, who finished with 21 kills and 18 digs. Leighton added 41 assists and 14 digs, while Cartee added 17 digs and 10 kills to go along with Tori Hughes’ 16 digs.
