Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center, located at 1219 County Road 187, Danville, is hosting the free lecture, “Smokey Bear: An American Icon,” in celebration of 75 years of wildlife prevention artwork, Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. 

The free public lecture will be given by guest speaker Bob Pasquill. Bob is a retired Forest Heritage program manager for the United States Forest Service. As the former Heritage program manager, Bob has performed cultural resource work for the National Forests, both as the forest archeologist and forest historian. His research interests eventually concentrated on early forest service history and the government programs that helped create the National Forests. 

In April 2001, Bob began public education programs on the Civilian Conservation Corps. The University of Alabama Press published Pasquill’s book “The Civilian Conservation Corps in Alabama, 1933-1942, A Great and Lasting Good” in July 2008.  1933-1942, “A Great and Lasting Good” in July 2008. 

Bob’s additional research and writing included the early history of fire prevention in the Southern region of the U.S. Forest Service; the USDA’s cattle tick eradication program of the early 20th century; and the Smokey Bear artists.  

Everyone is invited to attend this program to learn about the artists who created the beloved firefighting bear illustrations from the 1940s to the mid ’70s. Everyone is also welcome to bring their favorite Smokey Bear memorabilia to show off.

Corinth West Baptist Church Activities

The members of Corinth West Baptist Church held their Senior Citizen Day July 16 at 11 a.m. Patricia Echols, GayNell Wilhite and Anita Reid directed the program, meal and bingo games following lunch.  

A patriotic theme was used, and everyone enjoyed the wonderful lunch provided by members and visitors. Four games of bingo were called by Felicia Cook, who enabled attendees to choose nice prizes from the tables provided and was supervised by Anita Reid. 

Before the day’s activities, a devotional program was given by Alisa Lake, using the 71st through 92nd Psalms. The theme was from the 92nd: “The Elderly Can Always Do Good Works.”

Falkville Town Hall Activities

District 9 Rep. Scott Stadthagen and Sen. Arthur Orr obtained a grant and other funds for the Falkville Police Department through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. The money will be used for in-car cameras in the police vehicles. 

Aaron Burgess was named police chief of Falkville July 11. Aaron and wife Sammie Joe Blackwood have three children and live near Falkville. Chief Burgess has the area’s support and good wishes. 

The Falkville Town Council has set October 12 as the date for the 22nd Fall Festival. Hattie Mae Harden celebrates 101st birthday

Special congratulations go out this week to Hattie Mae Harden for her 101st birthday, celebrated July 13. 

Hattie Mae enjoyed a celebration party in her room at Summerford Nursing Home. She enjoyed the balloons, visitors, cards and gifts. 

The party was given by her daughter, Katie Sue Harden; her grandson, Barry Harden; and great-grandson Mac Harden.
