A Look Back at prominent people in the news in 1962

Jan. 18, 1962—Guy Roberts of Hartselle, chairman of the Morgan County Board of Revenue is in Montgomery today to attend a conference on rural development.

Jan. 18, 1962—Hartselle postmaster Hugh F. Penn was in Athens tonight to attend a meeting attended by his counterparts in other communities in north Alabama.

Jan. 18, 1962—Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Murphy of Falkville are the proud parents of a new baby girl, whom they have named Laura Annette.

Jan. 18, 1962—Morgan County House Rep. Albert Brewer announces his candidacy for a third term.  Most recently Brewer was a strong champion of reapportionment of the Alabama Legislature.

Jan. 19, 1962—Bear Bryant’s coaching contract at Bama has just been extended by a decade.  Coach Bryant will make $18,000 a year.

Jan. 19, 1962—Morgan County Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten announced today that he is running for another term in office. He has been employed by the county school system nearly thirty years.

Jan. 19, 1962—The annual anthology of college poetry will include a poem written by Tom Drinkard Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Drinkard Sr., of Falkville. Tom is a student at Florence State.

Jan. 19, 1962—U.S. Sens. John Sparkman and Lister Hill and U.S. Rep. Bob Jones have advised the Morgan County Board of Education that schools here will soon be receiving funds from the federal government due to the fact that so many of their folks are working for Uncle Sam.

Jan. 19, 1962—W. D. (Bill) Lindsey of Hartselle has informed the public that he is running again for sheriff of Morgan County. Mr. Lindsey sought the office four years ago but finished second to the late Sheriff Jimmy Collier. Mr. Lindsey felt that he rightfully should have had the sheriff’s position when Sheriff Collier passed away.

Jan. 19, 1962—Courthouse offices are closed today. It is Robert E. Lee’s birthday.

Jan. 20, 1962—J. R. Tolleson, 85, who resided on East Hickory Street passed away at home this afternoon. His funeral will be Monday at First Baptist with the Rev. W. L. Carden officiating. In addition to the widow, Mr. Tolleson is survived by four daughters, including Mrs. S. E. (Clyde) Stewart, two sons, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jan. 21, 1962—Auburn got revenge on Bama tonight in basketball, beating the Tide 60-50 in a game played in Montgomery, where these matches are always held.

Jan. 21, 1962—A singing was held this afternoon at the Penn Church of God near Massey. The Rev. D. R. “Red” Jarrett always chairs these highly successful community events.

Jan. 22, 1962—Boonie Drinkard, who resides with his family on East Hickory Street, today announced his candidacy for the Alabama House of Representatives, place 2, being vacated by Rep. Bob Gilchrist, who is running for the Senate. Mr. Drinkard formerly operated a funeral home and an auto dealership here.

Jan. 23, 1962—Mrs. Grady (Margie) Long announced today that she will run for Morgan County superintendent of education against incumbent Lester Wooten. Her husband is the mayor of Hartselle. She is currently a faculty member at Crestline Elementary.

Jan. 24, 1962—Attorney General MacDonald Gallion, who is now running for governor of Alabama, pledges not to wage a negative campaign and is asking all of the other candidates to do the same.

Jan. 24, 1962—Several local hunters are participating in a crow roost shoot that began in the Wheeler Refuge today. The crow roost is located near the mouth of Flint Creek. It will last for three days.

Jan. 24, 1962—Mrs. Earl Legg, Hartselle 2, is a medical patient at Baugh-Wiley-Smith Hospital in Decatur.

Jan. 24, 1962—Local young people hoping to attend UA in the spring semester beginning next month are out of luck if they haven’t already been accepted. President Frank Rose announces there is no more space for new students.
