There are a lot of ways to be part of a team. The most conventional route would be to practice, enhance your skills and try out to make whatever squad you are wanting to join. However, if we are being honest, sometimes we are not all cut out to play certain sports.

If you happen to be one of the many that never make it as an athlete in a specific sport, there is still a way you can be part of the team. Take Hartselle football player Conner Tumlinson for example.

While Tumlinson certainly qualifies as an athlete on the gridiron, he never really had aspirations of being a basketball player. However, he did have aspirations of being involved in Hartselle basketball.

During the Morgan County Tournament in January, underneath one of the baskets, you could clearly see Tumlinson and his crew decked out in vintage basketball jerseys. The throwback gear was part of themed night where the Tiger Student Section was “taking it back.”

“It starts with a group message we have where we talk about the theme of the night,” Tumlinson said. “We change it up and keep it interesting.”

There are a lot of solid student sections in the Morgan County area. Tumlinson recognizes this, but he also does not hesitate to say that there is no one quite like Hartselle’s

“I feel like we are the trendsetters around here,” Tumlinson said. “Our section is usually a lot bigger and a lot louder. It’s fun when the other schools bring a big group too. We seem to get in the heads of the opposing team and sometimes we have to watch what we are saying and dial it back. Coach (Faron) Key loves it so we are going to keep it up.”

The Hartselle boys will travel to Austin tonight for the opening round of the Class 6A Area 15 tournament. Tumlinson said he and his crew will be ready.

“We got something planned,” Tumlinson said. “I guess you will have to show up to see.”
