The commission members elected to authorize an appropriation of funding to NARCOG, which will become effective in the 2017/2018 fiscal year.

County Commission Chairman Ray Long said MCATS was taken over by NARCOG when the county commission turned over the business to them in October of 2016. The county commission has been funding them since to get the group started.

“It’s a great program, but it’s also a business and we want it make strides, but also, run on their won,” Long said. “We’ve since gotten separation of MCATS and NARCOG has taken it over to run with it.”

Long said the funding for the first year to the group was $220,000 and for the next fiscal year, they are cutting it to $150,000.

“We’re still allowing them to use our building and we will assist them in 2018, but that will be the last year they will receive funding,” Long said. “A lot of money is often matched by grants, so they’ll have some avenues to raise money and won’t need as much supplemental cash. They will become their own business.”
