Lady Tigers struggle to connect

The Lady Tigers lost two and tied one during the Island Cup tournament Feb. 20 and 21 in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

They lost their first game to Huntsville 6-0 after senior defender Claire Forsythe was injured. Coach William Partlow said they were down only 1-0 at halftime, but the injury in the second half hurt their defense. Huntsville quickly ran the score up before the end of the game.

HHS lost their second game to Fairhope 2-0 after a hard-fought battle. They had plenty of shots on goal, but were never able to connect.

They finished out the weekend with a 1-1 tie with Foley on Saturday. Freshman Audrey Dean found freshman Masie Williams for the lone goal.

“We were facing 7A schools all weekend in a bracket of death,” Partlow said. “We were okay for the first half of the Huntsville game until Claire got hurt. She has the most accurate powerful leg on our defense, and she may have torn ligaments. The Fairhope game was close too, but we could never connect with a shot.”

The Lady Tigers have had trouble scoring this season.

“We are really having a scoring problem,” Partlow said. “We have a really solid defense, but our younger and smaller offense is having trouble taking on the bigger defenses we are facing. We can shut people out, but we can’t score ourselves. We plan to make some lineup changes to hopefully give us some stronger girls up front in scoring positions.”

The Lady Tigers tied Arab 0-0 Tues., Feb. 24 before their following two games of last week were postponed due to snow.

Hartselle (0-3-4) will play Mars Hill Tuesday night on the UNA turf field.

Partlow said the weather is taking a toll on their season.

“We have already dropped three games in a short season,” Partlow said. “Hopefully we will start area play this week against Austin Thursday, but it might get postponed as well. We may have to start adding weekend games to get all of them in on time because we have missed too many games already.”
