Daughters of Confederacy holds December meeting

Alabama’s historical and fun facts with her diversities were shared by Joe Wheeler #291 UDC members Dec. 5, at the home of Linda Edwards, Alabama Division president.

Members voiced that they are particularly proud to live in the state of the first white house of the confederacy. All agreed that Alabama, a land of mountains, lakes and rivers that run toward the plains and on to the Gulf of Mexico has much to offer.

Sarah Gray stated that she remembered when Huntsville, our neighbor, was a textile town, not the rocket city of today. Decatur is a city rebuilt from the destruction of the War Between the States.

A strange story is ours: The yankees told the residents to clear out and they did. The houses were torn apart and assembled into a fort while gaining control of the railroad.

Glendora James reminded us that the song “Alabama” has seven verses and is a story of Alabama. Kathy Jones read the Alabama Creed.

“Stars Fell on Alabama” really happened in the 1800s and was the inspiration for the popular song’s lyrics.

A wreath was placed on the confederate monument at Cotaco Park and Courtland’s square in observance of the upcoming Alabama Day by President Faye McWhorter before boarding a plane for Italy where she will be honing up on her culinary skills. She plans to return home just in time for a southern Christmas.

Members reported sending 600 Christmas cards to Alabama’s four veterans homes. Christmas gifts were collected and will be delivered to Tut-Fann Veterans Home, in Huntsville next week. Canned goods will be given to the Committee on Church Corporation also and the selection of gifts for recipients from the Angel tree is already done.

The meeting adjourned and a delicious Christmas smorgasbord was enjoyed by all.

Members attended the Children of the Confederacy’s annual Christmas program Dec. 6, at Mountain Creek Confederate Park, Marbury Ala. Third vice president Betty Lovvorn and Little Joe Wheeler #764 Children of the Confederacy members were in attendance, placing ornaments on the Christmas tree, singing carols and presenting toys for those less fortunate.
