Madison: Hall to be absent from mayor’s post

Hartselle City Attorney Larry Madison has announced that Mayor Don Hall will be absent for an undetermined period of time to address personal issues following his arrest Friday night.

Council President Bill Smelser will serve as acting mayor in Hall’s absence and President Pro Tempore Kenny Thompson will serve as council president while Smelser assumes mayoral duties.

Here is the statement from Madison sent today by the City of Hartselle:

“Hartselle Mayor Don Hall will be absent from the City or otherwise unable to fulfill his duties as Mayor for an undetermined period of time while addressing personal issues. As provided by Alabama law, Council President Bill Smelser will act as Mayor pro tempore with the power and authority of the Mayor during this time. Council President pro tempore Kenny Thompson will serve as Council President during this period and, in the event Council President Smelser is absent or unable to act, will have the power and authority of the Mayor during the time that Council President Smelser is absent or unable to exercise that power and authority.”

Hall was charged with driving under the influence during a traffic stop by Alabama State Troopers Friday night on I-65.
