Union Grove man charged with Domestic Violence

A Union Grove man was arrested and charged with Domestic Violence by Strangulation or Suffocation July 7, according to a police report.

Derek Chad Parson, 30, of 5023 Pleasant Valley Road was placed in the Morgan County Jail after turning himself in to authorities. He is accused of brutally attacking his girlfriend, Bertha Virginia Smith June 25.

Smith suffered serious physical injuries, including rib fractures, contusions, internal bleeding, facial and head trauma and loss of consciousness. She is currently undergoing treatment in Morgan, Cullman and Madison counties.

Domestic Violence by Strangulation or Suffocation is a Class B felony offense. His bond is set at $25,000, and Parson remains in jail at this time.

Special Victims’ Unit Supervisor Sgt. Pete Taylor says other associated charges are pending in this incident.
