Danville student struck by car, killed

A Danville teenager was killed early Tuesday morning after being struck by a 2002 Pontiac as he was walking along County Road 41 to Danville High School for an 8 a.m. football workout.

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn identified the victim as Austin David Cook, 15, of Danville. He was an incoming freshman at Danville High School.

Jason W. Thayer, 36, of Danville was identified as the driver of the car.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:50 a.m. on County Road 41 about two miles north of Danville.

Chunn said the youth died from blunt force trauma.

The accident is under investigation by state troopers.

Danville High School principal Pat Smith said Cook had been attending weight lifting sessions for football this summer, for which he usually arrived early.

Smith said they would be praying for the family.

“Anytime a child is killed, we are all very saddened,” Smith said. “We feel for the family and will certainly be keeping them in our prayers. This is such an unfortunate situation, but we plan on attending the funeral.”

Smith said the assistant football coach Homer Jones would meet with the team to let them know of the situation.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Peck Funeral Home.
