DANVILLE NEWS: Danville track team attends Cullman Invitational

Danville High School track star Dallas McAbee won first place in the 100 and 200 meter runs and third in the long jump on March 8 at the Cullman Invitational. Slater Robinson won the javelin throw and placed second in the long jump. Parker Hale won second in shot put and the relay team of Brandon McCormick, Dallas McAbee and D. J. Batts won first place. D.J. won first place in the long jump. Chris Mahr won second in the discus.

Danville High School Girls Track team also did well in the Cullman Invitational. Haley Bryson placed third in the 100-meter dash and Esthepany Morales, Mary Frances Shelton and Shelby Ziegler also participated. The Relay Team of Erica McDaniel, Kara McLemore, Briley Morris and Haley Bryson won fourth place in the 4x100m, Kara, Briley, Haley and Shelby placed third in the 4x400m, Kourney Lindsey, Esthepany Morales, Bethanie Vest and Kara McLemore’s relay team won third place in the 4x800m.

Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church express Christian love and heartfelt prayers for the following soldiers and their families: Justen Terry of Navy, Brandon Jones, Derek Jones of the Marines, Jeremy White, Jack C. Herbert, Jodie Vick of Afghanistan, Anthony Thomas, Lee Thompson and Brad Wallace. Our prayers go out for all of our soldiers and their families.

Special belated happy wedding anniversary wishes go out this week to Greg and Pam (Bryant) Holmes of Massey who were married on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2010, at McKendree United Methodist Church.

Belated happy birthday wishes go out this week to Martha (Howse) Bickham who was 89 years young on March 11. Martha is a member of Cedar Plains Christian Church and a former resident of Massey. She later lived in Hartselle, Crossroads in Cullman County and now Tupelo, Miss. with her daughter, Ruth Griffin Hollingsworth and her husband, Gordon. We wish you better health and more happy birthdays Martha.

Fairview Church-the Grace Place has a Tuesday night recovery ministry for those who have addictions, habits and struggles in life. The Celebrate Recovery program begins at 7 p.m. and childcare is provided. For more information, please call, 256-339-8095.

The Falkville Public Library Board met on Tues., March 18, at 4 p.m. in the library office and conference room. Rhona Summerford welcomed members and minutes of the previous meeting in February were read and approved. The treasurer’s and librarian’s reports were given by Kay Farrer, Pam MacDonald and Jenny Asherbranner respectively. The primary business was planning open house for April 1 at the library, from 3-6 p.m. Other projects discussed were the Summer Reading Program in July and computer classes to be scheduled. Rhona will be signing her book“The Falkville Connection” on April 1, at the open house. The group enjoyed refreshments and the meeting was adjourned.

Area restaurants and churches featured Irish food for their potluck meals for St. Patrick’s Day on Mon., March 17. Corned beef and cabbage and Irish stew were popular with soda bread, along with potato soup and other potato dishes. Restaurants and fellowship halls were decorated with leprechaun hats, rainbows and pots of gold coins, shamrock posters, green streamers and beads and shamrock plants. Church members learned about St. Patrick teaching the Irish Christianity. He actually used the shamrocks three leaves and said they represented the Trinity-Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Irish Blessing was read, “Wish You the Luck O’ the Irish.”

Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church remember in loving memory this week: Ottie Lou Self, from March 6, 1930, to Nov. 2006, Odis “Junior” Lacy, from March 11, 1927, to Aug. 27, 2006, and Fay Edwards, from March 22, 1931 to June 25, 2007.

New Life-God’s Church singers were at the Falkville Health Care and Rehab Center for their Monday morning service on March 17. The group will be going on other Mondays to sing for the patients and staff.

Andrew’s Chapel Baptist Church has Sunday school at 10 a.m. and morning worship service at 11 a.m. The minister is John Franks. He welcomes visitors to attend their services.

Special belated happy birthday wishes go out this week to Emmalyn Wallace, Jason Palmer, Kim Callahan, all on March 25. Happy birthday wishes also go out this week to Dickie Gillott on March 27, Mildred Lake, Tim Lacy and Jada Vest on March 29 and Macky Vest on March 31.

On Sun., March 16, McKendree United Methodist Church had Bible study at 6 p.m. Brother Mike Vest is leading the group in the study of the Book of Nehemiah. Afterwards, the members honored Robert Summerford and Ally Henson with a potluck supper and a wedding shower in the fellowship hall. The couple plans to be married Sat., May 24, at the home of Rhona Summerford in Falkville.

Wonderful happy wedding anniversary wishes go out this week to Chuck and Kim Parker as they celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary on March 28, for Dustin and Whitney Holbert as they celebrate their second wedding anniversary on March 30 and Tad and Ginger Campbell as they will celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary on March 31.
