The Danville Hawks lost 14-7 to Holly Pond in a preseason scrimmage at Brindlee Mountain High School last Friday night.

Holly Pond’s Dakota Burks scored the game-winning touchdown on a 45-yard interception return with 2:47 left in the half. The teams played only two 12-minute quarters. Danville would get the ball two more times but the Hawks were unable to threaten.

Holly Pond scored first, driving 65 yards in 11 plays, all on the ground. The Bronco touchdown came on a four-yard run on fourth and goal. The extra point was good and Holly Pond led 7-0 with 5:43 left in the opening quarter. For the game, the Broncos netted 108 yards of total offense, all on the ground.

Danville’s lone touchdown came on an 11-yard Justin Morgan to Austin Clemons pass. Brock Garrison’s PAT tied the game at seven with 7:46 left in the second and final period. The Hawk drive covered 59 yards in two plays. Morgan hit Travis Turrentine for a gain of 48 yards before finding Clemons on the next play. Morgan did pass for 137 yards but also threw four interceptions, the second of which was returned for the game winning touchdown. The third and fourth interceptions came late as the Hawks were trying to get into position to score.

Danville will open its season Thursday night at home against Randolph. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
