City gets funding for Bethel Road repavement

The City of Hartselle is getting some help from the Alabama Department of Transportation to repave Bethel Road in the area of the new Hartselle High School.

The grant is coming from the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program. The cost of the project, according to numbers released by Gov. Robert Bentley Thursday, indicate the project will cost about $1.1 million.

The state will provide $883,608 and the local match will be $220,902, which will come out of the new high school’s $40 million bond.

Mayor Dwight Tankersley said the city applied for this funding earlier this year and was pleased the city was selected for the first round of ATRIP.

“We’d like to thank Sen. Arthur Orr for helping make sure that we obtained this funding,” Tankersley said. “It is definitely appreciated.”

School Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed said

he was especially thankful for the grant to help cut the cost of the road’s construction.

“It’s going to allow us the opportunity to put more money back into the building,” Reed said. “We are very happy to get this funding.”

This funding will pay for improvements to Bethel Road between Alabama 36 and Indian Hills Road, which includes turn lanes for the new Hartselle High School and F.E. Burleson Elementary.

Tankersley said he wasn’t sure when the city would receive the funding, but he said the project would be reviewed by the Alabama Department of Transportation and then bids would be requested on the project.

In a press release Thursday morning, Bentley announced the 105 road and bridge rehabilitation projects that were included in the first round of funding for ATRIP.

Other Morgan County projects included a new bridge on Danville Road at Flint Creek for $3 million and resurfacing Decatur’s Church Street from 19th Street to Point Mallard Drive.
