Students to be recognized at Calhoun

Students from Hartselle and Danville are among Calhoun Community College students who will be singled out for special recognition at the college’s Annual Honors Day program Fri., April 27. at 10 a.m. in the Kelley Gymnasium.

Hartselle’s Chelsey George and Danville’s Hannah Lauren Ledbetter will be honored as two of the college’s Ten Most Outstanding Students. Other “Top Ten” honorees are Kristopher Shaun Bennefield and Melissa Anne Bennefield, both of Decatur; Garrett Bosse, Madison; Stephen Cantley, Tina Rene Cooley, William E. Gilliam and LaJoy A. Johnson, all of Huntsville; and Njoc Dung (Sydney) Duong, Athens.

These students rank at the top of their respective divisions and departments academically as well as having been named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.” Other awards to be presented during the ceremony include the James B Allen Pin Award, which is given in honor of the late U.S. Senator James B. Allen to the student who has demonstrated order through citizenship, scholarship and service.

George is a general studies major, an active member of the Student Veteran’s Association and a member of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.” She is active in her community through her role as a military police officer in the Alabama Army National Guard. She worked with disaster relief efforts following the 2011 tornadoes and is also active in her church. She is not certain of her ultimate career goals now because she is being deployed in June 1012.She plans to spend her year overseas deciding what career path to take. Her GPA is 4.0.

Ledbetter is a secondary teacher education major, an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as both the Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta honor societies. She is active in her community through service as a volunteer at local elementary schools and the nursery at her church. She also gives free guitar lessons to her fellow softball team members. Her goal is to attend the University of North Alabama and eventually become an English Teacher. She would also like to eventually further her education and teach on the college level. Her GPA is 4.0.

A picnic for students and their families is scheduled immediately following the ceremony.
