Priceville donates land for new high school site

The Morgan County School system now has the land its needs for a new Priceville High School site.

The Priceville Town Council donated 36 acres for that purpose at its meeting Tuesday night. The land is located at the end of Bethel Road and North Park. It is part of a 90-acre tract the town purchased in 1987.

The decision was made with unanimous consent of the mayor and three council members after Morgan County Superintendent Bill Hopkins addressed the governing body in a work session preceding the meeting.

“We’re grateful and very excited to enter into a partnership with the city of Priceville for land that is needed as a site for a new Priceville High School,” said Hopkins. “This action shows how Priceville values education and will greatly facilitate our plans to build a new school when funding becomes available.”

“This is another step in our ongoing efforts to promote the growth and welfare of our community,” said Mayor Melvin Duran. “We put a high value on education and recognize the need for a new high school.”

“I’m thankful we have a school board and a superintendent that is looking ahead and taking care of our kids,” said Councilman Tommy Perry.

In other matters the council:

• Approved a resolution authorizing the use of the m100 Optical Scanner Voting Machines for use in all elections conducted in the municipality.

• Approved payment of bills for the month of November totaling $84,413.17.

• Suspended the rules and voted approval of an ordinance annexing 1.86 acres of property owned by Tommy and Delores Livingston.

• Approved travel expenses for Mayor Duran to attend an AMIC meeting in Montgomery Jan. 17, 2012.

• Approved $35 for 2012 membership dues in the National Animal Control Association for Herman Davis.

• Approved $8,000 for the purchase of drainage culverts on a new road linking Marco and Bethel roads.
