Christmas Open House set for this weekend

Corn stalks, bales of hay and pumpkins vanished from the streets in Hartselle’s central business district Monday night as merchants began switching to lighted garland, Christmas trees and red and green bows in preparation for Christmas Open House.

Merchants will extend their regular shopping hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday for a preview of their holiday merchandise under the auspices of the Downtown Merchants Committee.

Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce will roll out the red carpet for its annual Christmas Open House on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Children’s and youth hand bell ringers from Hartselle First United Methodist Church will entertain the crowds at The Depot. In addition, Santa, Mrs. Claus and an elf will be available to talk to the kids and make note of their Christmas gift wishes.

“A Taste of Hartselle” will not be offered this year, according to Susan Hines, chamber president.

“We’re urging folks to enjoy lunch at home or at one of our popular restaurants and then come to town and spend an enjoyable afternoon of Christmas shopping. “Most of our downtown stores will be open and displaying many new and exciting gift items. This is an excellent opportunity for them to get a step up on holiday shopping.”

Many of the antique and specialty shops are planning to serve finger foods and punch to their visitors.
