Garner named state’s best truck driver

BESSEMER – Ross Garner of Hartselle, was named the best professional truck driver in Alabama after winning the Three-Axle competition and receiving the highest overall score in the nine competing categories at the 2011 Alabama Truck Driving Championships.

The annual event is sponsored by Alabama Trucking Association, Inc.

Garner, who drives for FedEx Freight, now qualifies to compete in the American Trucking Associations’ National Truck Driving Championships Aug. 9-13 in Orlando, Fla. – also known as the “Super Bowl of Safety.”

The winners from each of the eight other categories are also eligible to compete in the national championship.

Nearly 400 drivers from all 50 states will compete in Orlando for four days, challenging their driving skills, and knowledge of safety, equipment and the industry. From 18-wheeler five axle sleepers to tank trucks to twin trailers—they will drive a course that recreates situations truck drivers face daily. These maneuvers may include: an alley dock, a rear line stop, a side park, a scale stop, a right turn, a front line stop, and straight line driving through a diminishing clearance.

City accepting applications for CBDR Board

The City of Hartselle is currently accepting applications for the Central Business Design Review Board for one expired term.

Applications are available in the City Clerk’s office in City Hall during normal business hours or can be downloaded on the city’s website, www.hartselle.org.

The deadline to submit applications is Friday, Aug. 12, at 4 p.m.

Crestline meet your teacher day set for Friday

On Aug. 12 from 8-9 a.m., all Crestline students and their parents are invited to stop by the school and meet their new teacher. This is a great time to drop off supplies and pick up the paperwork that needs to be completed.

The school will also have its parent orientation for third grade today, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m. Parent orientations for kindergarten and fifth grades will be Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

HJHS to have locker sale Friday

Hartselle Junior High School will have its locker sales for seventh and eighth graders Friday, Aug. 12.

Seventh graders can purchase lockers from 1-2 p.m. while eighth graders can purchase lockers from 2-3 p.m.

The locker fee is $15 and includes both gym and book lockers. The cost of the student planner is $5.

HJHS sixth grade open house set for Sunday

Hartselle Junior High School will have open house for the new sixth grade students on Sunday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m.

The students will receive their schedules. Your child’s homeroom teacher will be selling lockers for $15 per year. This covers both the gym and book locker. You may also bring your child’s supplies and place them in the locker. The gym locker will be issued during the first few days of school in physical education.

All students are required to have an assignment notebook. You may purchase a HJHS assignment notebook at the Open House for $5.

FEB to have open house today

F.E. Burleson Elementary School will have open house today, Aug. 11.

Kindergarten parents will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m.in the East Commons Area. On Friday, Aug. 12, parents can come anytime between 8:30-9:30 a.m. and meet the teacher and bring your students’ school supplies.

First and second grade parents will meet from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Parents must meet in the school gymnasium and will then be dismissed to the classrooms.

Third, fourth and fifth grades will meet 6:45-7:45 p.m. Parents must meet in the school gymnasium and be dismissed to the classrooms.

Barkley Bridge sets orientation dates

Barkley Bridge Elementary School has set its student orientation dates for the upcoming school year.

All sessions will begin in the library and then move to individual classrooms.

For first grade, parents and students may bring supplies today, Aug 11., from 6-7 p.m.

For third grade, parents and students may bring supplies today, Aug. 11, from 5:15-6:15.

For fifth grade, students and parents may bring school supplies today, Aug. 11. from 6:45-7:45 p.m.

Orientation for kindergarten, second grade and fourth grade were held earlier this week.
