Funeral for John N. Bates, 60, of Hartselle was Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at Central Baptist Church in Decatur with the Revs. Rob Jackson and Ben Bates officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Hartselle City Cemetery.
Mr. Bates died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at his residence. He was born Feb. 21, 1948, in Morgan County to John F. Bates and Ethel Mae Lancaster Bates. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Decatur and a longtime Sunday school teacher. He was a residential contractor. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Christine Capezzi, Virginia Dumas, Margie Lang and Catherine Bates; and two brothers, Oliver Bates and Travis Bates.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Martine Bates of Hartselle; two sons, Jefferson G. Bates of Hartselle and the Rev. Benjamin E. Bates and wife Paula of Henderson, N.C.; three brothers, Jasper Bates of New London, Ohio, Lester Bates of Milan, Ohio and Jim Bates of Norwalk, Ohio; two sisters, Peggy Nell King of Valley City, Ohio and Pat Allen of Lebanon Junction, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Sofia Bates, Baron Bates and Nathan Bates.
Pallbearers were Larry Bates, Don Bates, Buddy Black, Dr. Steve Pearson and Ray Brown.
