Volunteers needed for modern education programs

By By Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer
A push is on in Morgan County to build the volunteer base for 4-H clubs.
Fisher said about 300 kids between the ages of 9 and 19 participated in 4-H clubs in Morgan County during the 2007-08 school year. Most of them had teachers as volunteer leaders.
Traditionally, 4-H clubs are organized early in the school year as an extracurricular student activity. However, they may be organized outside of the school and meet at any number of places including churches, community centers or even private homes.
Another 4-H club is composed of home school students and meets at the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Office.
The 4-H program in Morgan County is supervised by Kenneth Gamble, a former full-time 4-H agent in Morgan County. He is now serving as a regional extension agent with responsibility for 4-H work in Morgan, Franklin and Lawrence counties.
He and Fisher train and certify 4-H volunteers, conduct background checks, provide program materials and visit them periodically.
Anyone interested in becoming a 4-H volunteer should call 773-2549.
