July 3, 1958-Bids will be opened later today on a new cafeteria building for the Morgan County Training School.
July 3, 1958-B. M. Shull is the newly elected commander of the Hartselle American Legion post. He succeeds L. J. Johnson.
July 4, 1958-A Hartselle taxi driver was arrested at his home on Highway 36 today as he apparently was getting ready to deliver some goods designed to enhance a party in progress on Independence Day. The wildcat whiskey was temporarily stored in a churn but now it is at Hartselle police HQ.
July 5, 1958-David Buckelew is spending the weekend with homefolks. He is attending summer school at API.
July 6, 1958-A Hartselle police officer who was not on duty at the time was arrested tonight and accused of transporting five gallons of wildcat, the liquor being found in his vehicle’s trunk. He was jailed briefly before posting a $750 bond. He claims innocence and says he found the can of whiskey on the side of the road and was headed to his department to turn it in when apprehended.
July 7, 1958-Auburn’s head football coach, Ralph “Shug” Jordan, and the athletic director, Joe Beard, addressed area alumni tonight in Decatur. Auburn was the nation’s number one football team last fall. Coach Jordan is 47 and has been at API for a dozen years. Prior to that he worked with Coach Wally Butts at Georgia. He was recruited to come to the plains early in 1951 after the football team had come off a season in which they failed to win a single game. During the previous four seasons they could claim only a handful of victories. He was born in Selma on Sept. 25, 1910. As a child he liked to eat sugarcane, hence the nickname.
July 7, 1958-Dr. Joe Hall moved today to a new office at Block-Chandler Hospital.
July 8, 1958-Several irate citizens want commercial dog kennels as well as rabbit farms to be outlawed within the city limits just as hog raising is now proscribed. Barking dogs as well as rapidly multiplying rabbits are considered to be nuisances.
July 8, 1958-The city council has reaffirmed its existing policy of giving its employees who have been on the job at least a year a week’s paid vacation.
July 8, 1958-The city council voted to boost police pay in the amount of $25 per month.
July 9, 1958-The State Highway Department is currently taking bids to pave the road between Eva and Florette.
