May 8, 1958-Funeral services were held in rural Cullman County today for a young man who was fatally injured in a car wreck on the day he was scheduled to be married. Apparently the victim and his future brother-in-law were racing their cars at the time the tragic accident occurred. They had just left a pre-nuptial party.
May 9, 1958-The John L. Roberts store on Main Street is closing its doors have 37 years in operation.
May 10, 1958-Paul McCullough is currently building a three-bedroom home on McClanahan Street the estimated cost of which is $7,500. Hartselle Hospital will build a new entrance to the facility and modernize the waiting room. The community’s other infirmary, Block-Chandler Hospital, is adding two new physicians’ offices.
May 11, 1958-Even though baseball definitely doesn’t generate as much interest as football, local Tide and Tiger fans are looking forward to the three-game series that Alabama and Auburn will play next week for the SEC championship. These teams won the east and west titles recently. The first two games will be played on the plains and the third, if it’s needed, in Tuscaloosa.
May 12, 1958-Hartselle Rep. Bob Gilchrist, north Alabama coordinator, and Attorney Grady Long, Morgan County chairman, were in Decatur this morning to meet with Attorney General John Patterson. Patterson had a big lead in the initial Democratic primary vote last week but has to defeat Judge George Wallace in the runoff in order to win the governorship.
May 12, 1958-Persons for whatever reason driving without licenses should beware. Hartselle police are now frequently stopping cars to verify that the driver has the necessary papers. This program is under the direction of Chief Curtis Chaney.
May 13, 1958-The Hartselle Rotary Club held its annual “ladies’ night” program tonight with Col. W. R. Mullane, deputy chief of the Jupiter missile project at Redstone as the guest speaker. Special guests were the widows of three late Rotarians, Mrs. Lee Palmer, Mrs. T. V. James, and Mrs. C. Y. Quinn.
May 14, 1958-It seems everyone where is talking about the Kinsey report on female sexuality released today. It found that 10 percent of American women are pregnant at the time of marriage. Even though it’s illegal, a great majority have an abortion if they can’t marry. They pay about $150.
