Hartselle wrestlers Dalton Nagel, Kyle Davis and Ethan Hamilton advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s state wrestling championships this weekend at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
The trio finished in top four places in their respective weight classes in the Class 5A sectionals last weekend at Scottsboro.
Hartselle finished seventh in the sectional team standings with 45 points. Scottsboro dominated the event and qualified 14 wrestlers for the state championships.
Scottsboro had 264.5 points in the sectional, 108.5 points ahead of runnerup Hayden.
Davis, a fourth place finisher last year at 125-pounds, defeated Moody’s Kent Lawley in the third place match by medical forfeit.
Davis, who also finished fourth in the 2006 state tournament at 112, will face Tallassee’s Chris Adams in the first round of this year’s state championships Friday.
Adams finished second in the Section 1 tournament last weekend.
Nagel was pinned in the third place match in the 119-pound weight class by Hayden’s Matt Kimbrough.
The senior will batle Sectional 1 champion Dav Shirley of Tallasee in the opening round Friday.
Hamilton was pinned in his third place bout by Scottsboro’s Billy Womack.
Hamilton, who finished fourth in the state last year, will wrestle Tallasee’s Jonathan Haynes in the first round.
Haynes won his weight class in the Section 1 tournament last weekend.
Barrett Eubanks, who recently returned from a knee injury that has kept him out of the Hartselle lineup for most of the season, finished with one victory in the sectional last weekend.
Hartselle’s Garrett Baldwin also picked up a win before a loss kept him from a qualifying spot.
Also competing in the sectional for the Tigers were Matt Watson, Alan Durham, Zach Hill, Luke Chaffee and David Filiatrault.
