March 23, 1957-If Birmingham residents are representative of the state at-large, most Alabamians would like for daylight savings (or “fast”) time to be used this year. A decisive majority who responded to a recent newspaper poll supported DST.
March 23, 1957-Rev. J. R. Havener has resumed the pastorate of the Piney Grove Christian Church near Falkville. He served the congregation in this capacity a couple of years ago.
March 24, 1957-Dean Jones, MGM star, singer, and Morgan County native, appeared on Steve Allen’s Los Angeles-based TV show tonight.
March 24, 1957-Mrs. Clara Newman, her mother, Mrs. J. L. Praytor, and her son, Tommy, moved this afternoon into their new home just completed on Short Street.
March 25, 1957-Hartselle property owners currently living on unpaved streets who would like to get them hard-surfaced this summer need to sign petitions indicating their willingness to be assessed to pay for this work.
March 26, 1957-The junior class at MCHS presented the play “The Little Dog Laughed” at Riddle auditorium tonight. The cast included Mary Orr, Don Summerford, Sylvia Stephenson, Martha Hartselle, Martha Stewart, Charter Nicholson, Patsy Alexander, Billy Don Aldridge, Gary Vest, Janice Templeton, Joy Turney, Shirley Garrison, and Lee Block.
March 27, 1957-What is the reading public of Hartselle now enjoying? The number one novel is “Payton Place” by Grace Metalious and leading in the nonfiction category is “The FBI Story,” chronicling the career of longtime Director J. Edgar Hoover.
March 28, 1957-The state board of education has approved new textbooks for use in the public schools for the 1957-58 school year.
Choices included three recently updated versions of the old McGuffy readers used by both the parents and grandparents of the present generation of students.
The board of education also OK’d an increase in student fees at the Troy, Livingston, Jacksonville, and Florence State Teachers Colleges up to $50 a year.
