Nov. 2, 1956 —Governor Jim Folsom flew to Decatur today in support of an amendment to the Alabama Constitution that would reapportion the State Legislature.
Hartselle Representative Bob Gilchrist and Decatur’s Albert Brewer traveled with the governor during his time here.
Nov. 2, 1956 —An unknown young man is passing forged checks locally. This afternoon he tried to use a bogus instrument to make a purchase from Cecil Johnson’s Clothing Store on Main Street.
Nov. 3, 1956 —Belk-Hudson’s business in Hartselle is booming. By January 1 Belk’s will expand to occupy the store building to the west. According to manager E. E. Maddox this will represent a 50 per cent boost in the space for displaying his much in demand merchandise.
Nov. 4 1956 —Rhona Howell has been selected as a member of the Huntingdon College chorale for the present school term.
Nov. 5, 1956 —Dr. Oliver C. Carmichael is stepping down as president of the University of Alabama effective January 1, 1957. Dr. Carmichael said he would become a consultant for the Fund for the Advancement of Education. Hartselle area students say that the college president has been criticized a lot for his handling of the Autherine Lucy integration crisis the first of the year.
Nov. 6, 1956 —More than a hundred members attended this afternoon’s meeting of the Hartselle elementary school PTA. Fourth grade student Charles Yarbrough gave the devotional.
Nov. 7, 1956 —Republicans are finally showing more strength in the Democratic bastion of Morgan County. President Eisenhower won 40 per cent of the vote this time as opposed to only 30 per cent four years ago when Hartselle’s John Sparkman was on the Democratic ticket. Also, the President actually carried four boxes in the county—in Decatur, Massey (a well-known Republican area), Lacon, and Eva. Hartselle remained solidly Democratic.
Nov. 7, 1956—More than 6,600 Morgan County vehicle owners still haven’t purchased their new 1957 tags. Probate Judge T. C. Almon, whose office handles sales, says he and his clerks wouldn’t be able to process this many applications before the current tags expire on November 15.
Nov. 8, 1956 —Hanceville’s superb Bulldogs outgunned a determined but outclassed Hartselle football team here tonight by a score of 26-6. Karl Estes made the lone MCHS score with a one-yard run following a second half Hanceville fumble.
