Aug. 24, 1956 —Local Chevy dealer and former Morgan County State Representative Bill Stewart reached the half-century mark today. Mr. Stewart received numerous “Happy Birthday!” greetings from his many friends both in Hartselle and from around the state.
Aug. 24, 1956 —Coaches Tony Daniel and J. P. Cain met with candidates for the 1956 edition of the MCHS Tigers for the first time this afternoon. Regular practice will begin on Monday. In the backfield, Karl Estes is the only one of last year’s starters to return and he will run at fullback during the upcoming campaign.
Aug. 24, 1956 —Katherine Ann Dunaway and Ann Hoffhaus returned today from Camp Sumatanga where they served as junior counselors.
Aug. 25, 1956 —The Morgan County Dairy show was held today at Bailey’s Gin. The Hartselle Chamber of Commerce sponsors this event.
Aug. 26, 1956 —The swimming pool closed for this season following this afternoon’s session. Pool manager Tony Daniel reports that business had a bad slump during the past two weeks because swimmers had just about had their season’s fill as far as swimming is concerned.
Aug. 27, 1956 —The semi-monthly meeting of the Wesleyan Service Guild of the First Methodist Church was today in the parsonage with Mrs. E. M. Barnes, Jr., as hostess.
Aug. 28, 1956 —Being a member of the Hartselle city council has its compensations—and one of them occurred tonight when the regular session in the municipal building opened with an ice cream and cake party. The host was W. H. (Country) Evans who was asking the council (successfully) for a monthly city appropriation of $25 to go for improvements at the Hartselle cemetery.
Aug. 29, 1956 —Decatur’s WMSL-TV, which completed two years of television operation on July 4, will begin carrying live programs from the NBC and CBS networks in about a month. Home viewers will also notice a much clearer picture than before (a lot less snow). Expect the station to begin telecasts daily between 7 and 8 a.m. instead of 1:45 p.m. at present.
Aug. 30, 1956 -At long last Hartselle residents will be available to have a convenient source for getting information about their favorite television programs. TV Guide is now available for sale at local drug stores.
Aug. 30, 1956 —The movie “Rock Around the Clock” with Bill Haley and his Comets has caused bumper to bumper auto traffic during its current run at the Ranch Drive-in Theatre.
