Dec. 29, 1955 -State Representative Bob Gilchrist believes Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten doesn't make enough money and will soon introduce a bill in the Legislature to remedy this situation. While most of his counterparts elsewhere are drawing $7,200 annually plus $150 per month for expenses, Wooten gets only $4,800 with $75 monthly for expenses. Also, eight Morgan County principals make more than their boss does.
Dec. 29, 1955 -Dr. Tom Guyton, who has served in Decatur for many years, is moving his practice to Hartselle next week, and on Wednesday will occupy his office in Hartselle Hospital, as an associate of Doctors W. C. Duncan and Fred Sherrill.
Dec. 30, 1955 -Priceville defeated Hartselle 59-53 in an away game for the Tigers tonight. While Herman Myers' MCHS squad lost the game, Jimmy Higdon of Hartselle was the night's leading scorer with 18 points. Charles Lambert had 14.
Dec. 30, 1955 -Workmen are completely remodeling the former Hollywood Drive-in Restaurant building, and Merrill W. Doss, the owner, will move his law office next week to that location on North Sparkman Street.
Dec. 30, 1955 -Mary Nell Howell (Mrs. Sim Jr.) is back at the Citizens Bank after an absence of two years or more.
Dec. 31, 1955 -Dr. and Mrs. Roland King attended the Gator Bowl game in Jacksonville, Florida, this afternoon. Unfortunately, the Vanderbilt Commodores beat the Auburn Tigers by the score of 25-13.
Jan. 1, 1956 -Hartselle's Strand Theatre has new admission prices going into effect today. Adult tickets will sell for 50 cents while children get in for two dimes.
Jan. 2, 1956 -MCHS and the Hartselle Elementary School resumed classes today following the Christmas break.
Jan. 3, 1956 -Benefits of the Salk polio vaccine were explained by Dr. Fred Sherrill, Jr., at a meeting of the Elementary School PTA today.
Jan. 3, 1956 -Gene Brindley Horton has returned to her studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville after spending Christmas here with homefolks.
Jan. 4, 1956 -The Redstone Arsenal payroll amounted to approximately $40 million in 1955. Many Hartselle residents commute daily to Huntsville to work at the Arsenal.
Jan. 5, 1956 -Arlo Abercrombie's MCHS biology students paid a visit to the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge this morning.
Jan. 5, 1956 -Hal Butler returned the first of the week to Jacksonville where he resumed his studies at the State Teachers College after spending the holidays here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Butler. Joy Broom has gone back to Judson College after enjoying Christmas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Broom.
Jan. 6, 1956 -S. E. "Happy" Gibson, young-looking and energetic at 69, retired this week after 26 years of carrying mail on Hartselle's thickly-populated Route 3. As a "going-away" present from folks along his route, Happy Gibson received a beautiful 21-jewel watch.
Jan. 7, 1956 -Danville narrowly defeated MCHS in a senior high basketball game tonight. Jimmy Higdon, Tiger forward, was the evening's leading scorer with 18 points.
Jan. 7, 1956 -Approximately 250 head of livestock were moved through the auction ring today at the Hartselle livestock sale barn, in the first sale of the new year. R. A. Payne, the proprietor, reported that everything was readily taken.
Jan. 8, 1956 -The Hartselle Fire Department answered 106 calls during 1955, according to records compiled by Chief Comer Henderson. Of these, 59 were grass fires, 38 were house or building fires, and 9 were car fires.
Jan. 9, 1956 -Cadet Ralph Pattillo returned today to Gary Air Force Base, San Marcos, Tex., after spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Pattillo.
Jan. 10, 1956 -J. P. Morgan and Company, one of Wall Street's leading banking houses, was low bidder for $456,000 in short-term debentures being issued by the Hartselle Housing Authority. Morgan bid 1.84 percent with an $11 premium. City Attorney Merrill Doss is handling the sale of the notes.
Jan. 11, 1956 -The John Guier family moved today from the F. E. Burleson house on East Main Street to the former Dr. Claude Lavender home just south of the city limits. Dr. Tom Guyton and family will move Friday into the house vacated by the Guiers.
