Hearing set for Peach Orchard Road zoning

A public hearing over a planned rezoning along Peach Orchard Road will be held at the April 27 Hartselle City Council meeting.
Several residents along the road are against the rezoning, which includes nine acres along Highway 31 North. The rezoning would change the land from residential to business.
The property is owned by Alvin Abercrombie, owner of Abercrombie Chevrolet and a Hartselle City Council member.
Peach Orchard Road property owners presented a petition against the rezoning at the last council meeting.
"We're opposed to having commercial property in our backyards," resident Susan Patterson said. "It will really hurt all our homes."
However, according to Jeff Johnson with the city's building department, even if the rezoning is approved, large-scale changes to the property may not be allowed.
Johnson said a site review plan would have to be approved if the property is rezoned. Included in that review would be items such as natural barriers and traffic patterns.
In another rezoning matter, the city will also be considering rezoning property behind the American Legion Building from agricultural to commercial. American Legion Officials said they would like to construct mini-storage buildings at the site and use the proceeds to support the Legion.
