Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
The Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame, which has honored former county athletes since 1989, will induct two local men, one in the football category and the other one in the booster category.
A former football star, Oscar Knox will be enshrined. Knox played at Auburn during 1955-57 while helping the Tigers win the national championship in 1957.
He played at Hartselle High and was the team's Most Valuable Player in 1954. He also was an all-county basketball player in 1954.
Knox said he had heard that this honor might be coming his way.
"I had heard people talking," Knox said. "I heard I might be going in, so it was some what of a surprise, but not a complete surprise."
Knox lists the national championship as his biggest thrill in sports.
"Winning a national title is such a big honor," Knox said. "I had some thrills in high school playing also, but to be part of winning a national title is the best one."
Also, Bobby Maxwell will be inducted. Maxwell is a former standout baseball player in 1957 and 1958 at Cotaco High School. Maxwell has served as Brewer High's biggest athletic booster since the school opened in 1972.
Possibly his biggest honor came in 1986 when the Morgan County Board of Education named the Brewer High School baseball field after him.
"I was surprised when they decided to name the stadium after me, " Maxwell said. "But this is a big surprise, too."
Knox and Maxwell will join four others in the 2004 class.
This year's event will be June 12 at the Decatur Holiday Inn and the induction will start at 7 p.m.
All proceeds from the banquet benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Decatur.
Doug Turney is in charge of ticket sales and anyone wishing to attend can call him at 773-2466.
