I recently heard on a news broadcast that scientists had successfully cloned a human embryo. If they can ever clone a human being, I think sports writers will be the first to try it. With the overlapping of sports seasons, spring may be the busiest time of the year for any sports department.
Springtime at the local high schools signal the beginning of many sports season activities. Baseball and softball are perhaps the most high profile of spring sports. However, boys and girls soccer is also played by most high schools. Don't forget about boys and girls golf and boys and girls track and field at the high school level. Finally, many high schools have boys and girls tennis teams, as well.
And that's just a start. Youth leagues for many sports are active in the spring. Youth baseball and softball are good for starters, but it doesn't stop with just those two. Youth leagues for both boys and girls can be found for soccer, tennis and also for swimming and diving.
You can start to see now what a challenge the spring can be for any sports writer. It's even tougher for a one-man sports department like the Hartselle Enquirer. How can one man cover all those sports? It takes help from the community.
Coaches who call or fax in game results are also a welcome sight in the sports department. Another big help are parents who e-mail or bring in the photos and results from games their sons and daughters have played in.
If you are a coach or parent of an athlete, you can help make this an outstanding sports section by sending in game results and photos from events that I can't attend. One man can't be everywhere, so many events will go without coverage if you don't let me know about their outcome.
I want as many games and sports as possible to be included in the sports section, but it won't happen without the help of parents and coaches.
Of course, if that doesn't work out, I guess I could see about having myself cloned.
