Jeff Miller knows the old adage well.
"You can't throw the ball if you can't run it," the Falkville head coach said.
The age-old saying held true Friday night, as the Blue Devils managed only three first downs in a 31-7 loss to Vinemont.
Falkville was held to negative-44 yards rushing in the contest.
"We have to get some better blocking up front and some better running," Miller said. "We ran the ball great against Danville earlier in the season and only had bits and pieces since then."
The only "bit" of offense the Blue Devils could muster was a 70-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Holladay to Steven Holt. Unfortunately, Falkville had fallen behind 21-0 prior to the scoring strike.
Ironically in what is perhaps the most-manliest sport on earth, a female made the most noise on this Friday night.
Vinemont kicker Amanda Gibson scored seven points on the night, including a 32-yard field goal.
Her first extra point in the opening stanza gave Vinemont a 7-0 edge. D.J. Methvin ran for the touchdown from nine yards out.
That score remained until 8:50 remaining in the first half. Vinemont's Christian Runge changed that by running for a touchdown on a blocked punt.
Minutes later, Vinemont quarterback Phillip Miller ran in from five-yards out, giving the Eagles a three-touchdown advantage.
After the Blue Devils' only score of the game came in the third quarter, Vinemont responded with a long drive, capped by Phillip Miller's 19-yard touchdown strike to Jason Veres.
Gibson later added the 32-yard field goal.
"It felt good to come out on top again," Vinemont head coach Kenny Griffin said. "The schools are so closely located that it has become a rivalry. But, we still di not execute as well in the second half as we did in the first."
Vinemont is now 3-2, while Falkville falls to 1-4.
