A look back to Feb 22-28, 1962
Feb. 22, 1962 – Hartselle resident Alva Heaps was shaken up but not injured in a vehicle accident that occurred within the Decatur city limits today as he was returning back home on Highway 31 S. The fault was that of the other driver who was in too big of a hurry.
Feb. 22, 1962 – Ralph Slate, the former Morgan County solicitor (D.A.), is now running to succeed Rep. Bob Gilchrist in the Alabama House. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Slate. A Decatur man also qualified, but this has always been regarded as “Hartselle’s seat.”
Feb. 22, 1962 – In the current drive to raise funds to support the 4-H Clubs, Enquirer publisher Jack Hoffhaus is in charge of getting donations from Hartselle businesses. He is enjoying a great deal of success and their contributions have already exceeded the established goal of $5,000.
Feb. 22, 1962 – Joe Bennich is heading up the current membership recruiting drive of the Hartselle Jaycees.
Feb. 22, 1962 – The favorite program among Hartselle residents tonight was “Dr. Kildare” starring Richard Chamberlain in the title role.
Feb. 23, 1962 – A recently enacted rule by the Alabama Bar Association has just about put an end to the state’s reputation as the “quickie” divorce capital of the U.S. Lawyers who participate in them will be disciplined by their professional group.
Feb. 22, 1962 – Howard Johnson is currently recovering from surgery at Decatur General Hospital.
Feb. 23, 1962 – Mrs. Lillie Powell Hanners and her two children, residents of Hartselle 4, were injured in an auto accident just north of the city limits this morning. Both of the children were taken to Hartselle Hospital.
Feb. 23, 1962 – Early tonight a strong wind came through this area. It blew down a barn on Iron Man Road. Also Jim Tucker’s wagon was moved a considerable distance from where he had it tied down.
Feb. 24, 1962 – Mrs. Mina Brooks, 72, a resident of Hartselle 3, died late this afternoon. Peck is handling the arrangements.
Feb. 26, 1962 – Former Hartselle Mayor John O. Burleson has joined what is now a field of eight candidates for the state representative position being vacated by Rep. Bob Gilchrist who is seeking to move up to the Senate. Mr. Burleson lives at 115 Bethel Road. His previous political experience includes four years as councilman and 12 years as mayor. He has also refereed countless ball games and played pro baseball many years ago.
Feb. 27, 1962 – A district FFA speaking and quartet contest was held at Danville High this morning. The Cotaco guys won as the best singing group (Dorsey and John Walker, Ronald Whitten, and Joel Gurley, with Almon Walker at the piano).
Feb. 27, 1962 – Belk-Hudson on Main Street has a founder’s day sale in progress. The chain now has 47 stores in 17 southern states. Ernest Maddox is the local manager.
Feb. 27, 1962—Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith are the proud parents of a son born today at Decatur General Hospital.
Feb. 28, 1962 – Gubernatorial candidate George Wallace spoke to students at Athens College at their chapel service this morning. He said that the U.S. Supreme Court had made several decisions that had favored Communism.
Feb. 28, 1962 – Local residents enjoyed seeing Dean Jones, a Morgan County actor with strong Hartselle connections, on “Wagon Train” tonight. He played “Lt. Burton” in an exciting episode of this popular TV series.
Feb. 28, 1962 – Seaman Robert Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Walker, 409 Sycamore Street, Hartselle, is now serving on the U.S.S. St. Clair County, which is a part of the Pacific Fleet Amphibious Operation.
