Coca Cola used the phrase “The Real Thing” in advertising its soft drink several years ago. Since then it has been used to describe something or someone who actually is what is claimed. The phrase is one I believe could apply to current Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. Tebow came into fame not only as the Florida Gator’s star quarterback but also as one who is not afraid to share his faith in Jesus Christ. From the John 3:16 painted under his eyes to his giving thanks after great plays this young man not only “talks the talk but also walks the walk.”

His future almost seemed to be planned even before he was born. It has been reported that his mother received recommendations from her doctor to abort the baby she was carrying in order that her own life might be protected. Mrs. Tebow had suffered a life threatening infection and the drugs given to her were thought to have adversely affected the child she was carrying. However, she relied on her faith and refused the doctor’s advice.

One could almost parallel Tebow’s life with great men from the Bible. When God has chosen a person to spread His word or to help in His cause man cannot stand in the way. Tebow was homeschooled along with his other siblings. The door was opened for him to play high school football when the Florida State Legislature passed laws stating the homeschooled students would be allowed to compete in local high school sporting events. His football skills led to his college career at the University of Florida where he gained the national spotlight as a passing and running quarterback. His determination and faith continued to be shown on and off the field. One source even referred to Tebow as “The Chosen One.”

With a very successful college career including winning the coveted Heisman Trophy, he was drafted by the Broncos. He continues to be successful and continues to use his athletic ability to share his faith. While many continue to look for the young man to step out of line and wait for him to fail it is very apparent that God has His hand on this football player. Tebow’s life is such a strong reminder that God still calls on men and women to continue to reach out to those in need and to go out into the world and make disciples of all men. What a lesson this young man can teach us if can have the kind of faith he has and never forget the words of John 3:16.
